Position Overview
Arc Health is seeking an experienced Certified Nurse Midwife to provide comprehensive women’s health and obstetric care at Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility in Chinle, Arizona. The clinician will support the Indian Health Service mission by delivering respectful, evidence-based care to patients throughout the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods in a rural Navajo Nation community. This role includes both outpatient and inpatient responsibilities and requires flexibility across clinic, Labor and Delivery and other assigned care areas.
Facility and Community
Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility is a 60-bed inpatient hospital and outpatient facility serving approximately 35,000 Navajo patients. Services include OB GYN and midwifery, Labor and Delivery, adult and pediatric inpatient care, intensive care, emergency medicine, surgery, women’s health, pharmacy, laboratory and radiology. Candidates should be prepared to practice in a remote setting and provide culturally responsive care that respects Navajo traditions, language needs and community practices.
Schedule and Assignment
- Weekday option: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week.
- Rotating shift option: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., Sunday through Saturday, including holidays, 12 hours per shift.
- Clinicians may be scheduled for both day and night shifts according to the needs of the midwifery service.
- Additional hours may be required when patient volume demands coverage, including rotation in the Obstetric Care Unit.
- Schedules are not guaranteed to remain fixed, and clinicians may rotate to other duty sections to support patient care.
- Assignments may include short-term coverage of approximately 13 weeks, longer-term coverage of one to three years or intermittent support.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide independent midwifery care to mothers and newborns, including patients with high-risk needs, within established clinical guidelines.
- Manage antepartum, labor and delivery, postpartum, family planning and gynecologic care in outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Complete histories and physical examinations; develop plans of care; admit patients; and write, administer and monitor appropriate orders and medications.
- Monitor labor and fetal status, including use and interpretation of fetal monitoring equipment and other specialized procedures within scope and privileges.
- Conduct spontaneous vaginal deliveries without forceps or vacuum assistance and perform related procedures within approved scope of practice.
- Recognize and respond to obstetric emergencies, including hemorrhage and shock, and obtain physician consultation when clinically indicated.
- Provide contraceptive management, pelvic examinations, Pap testing, nutritional counseling and patient and family education.
- Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams on high-risk patients, referrals, quality assurance and maternal-child health standards.
- Maintain timely, accurate and complete electronic health records in accordance with IHS, Joint Commission, CMS, HIPAA and facility requirements.
- Participate in patient, family, student and staff education and demonstrate respect for the culture and traditions of the communities served.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited certified nurse midwifery program.
- Board certification through the applicable national midwifery certifying body.
- Current, valid and unrestricted Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certified Nurse Midwife licenses in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico or a U.S. territory.
- Valid, current and unrestricted DEA registration covering Schedules II through V.
- Current CPR, Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certifications.
- First-assist surgical training or documented first-hand surgical-assist experience.
- Minimum of six months of recent certified nurse midwifery experience; recent clinical practice must meet facility credentialing requirements.
- Ability to complete credentialing, privileging, background investigation, health screening and required immunization documentation.
- Valid driver’s license if travel between IHS facilities is required.

Assignment Support
