Compensation Options
- $225 per hour as a 1099 independent contractor, with travel and lodging covered
- One-year W-2 salaried contract ranging from $375,000 to $395,000, plus benefits
Position Overview
Arc Health is seeking a Psychiatrist to provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient psychiatric services at Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility within the Navajo Area Indian Health Service. The physician will care for children, adolescents, adults, and families and will support the Counseling Department, Emergency Department, Urgent Care, and inpatient units. This position is designed for a psychiatrist who can deliver patient-centered care in a rural, culturally diverse community and collaborate closely with medical, behavioral health, and community partners.
Assignment Details
- Initial three-month assignment with up to seven additional three-month option periods, allowing a total potential term of two years
- On-site services at Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility and other clinics or healthcare facilities within the Chinle Service Unit
- Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; no flex time or scheduled callbacks
- May work longer hours when patient demand requires and may rotate to the Emergency Department or other duty areas to support patient care
- Government housing may be available at prevailing rental rates plus applicable utilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide outpatient and inpatient psychiatric evaluations, consultations, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care, including Emergency Department consultations and crisis stabilization.
- Interview and examine patients, review medical and psychiatric histories, order or perform appropriate diagnostic evaluations, and develop comprehensive diagnoses and treatment plans.
- Deliver age-appropriate psychiatric care for children, adolescents, adults, and families using accepted approaches to psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, group therapy, interactive therapies, behavior modification, psychosocial rehabilitation, and managed care.
- Assess symptoms, medications, diet, therapy progress, treatment adherence, and patient observations; adjust treatment plans as clinically indicated.
- Provide individual, family, and group psychotherapy and counsel patients and family members about diagnoses, treatment, prevention, and follow-up care.
- Manage psychiatric emergencies and arrange referrals or specialized care when services cannot be provided locally.
- Consult on complex cases with physicians, nurses, behavioral health staff, schools, social service agencies, and other community partners.
- Collaborate with social workers, community health nurses, health educators, and other professionals to address patients' medical, psychological, and social needs.
Documentation and Professional Standards
- Document every patient encounter accurately and promptly in the facility electronic health record, including consultations, diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, referrals, and follow-up care.
- Complete medical records within required timelines and in accordance with Indian Health Service, Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, HIPAA, and Privacy Act standards.
- Follow Chinle Service Unit Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, clinical policies, safety requirements, information security policies, and standards of care.
- Participate in required medical staff and department meetings, orientation, peer review, and professional practice evaluation activities.
- Maintain a professional, dependable, cooperative, and culturally respectful approach to patients, families, staff, and community partners.
Required Qualifications
- MD or DO degree from an accredited U.S. medical or osteopathic school. Graduates of an international medical school must hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certificate.
- Completion of at least 36 months of psychiatry residency training.
- At least six months of psychiatrist experience, with demonstrated competence caring for children, adolescents, adults, and families.
- Board certification through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. Newly graduated psychiatry residents may be board eligible.
- Active, current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.
- Active, unrestricted DEA registration covering Schedules II through V.
- Current CPR or BLS certification and any additional certifications required for the scope of practice.
- Recent clinical practice with no service gap exceeding six months before the assignment begins.
- Ability to complete credentialing, medical staff appointment, health screening, immunization requirements, fingerprinting, and Level I and Level II background investigations.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English and use a computer and electronic health record system.
Preferred Qualification
- Additional board certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Credentialing Requirements
- Three current professional references from healthcare providers familiar with the candidate's clinical practice skills
- One reference from the Chief of Staff, Medical Director, or immediate supervisor at the hospital where the candidate currently holds or most recently held privileges; recent residency graduates may use a program director or service chief
- Fitness-for-duty documentation and current immunization records, including annual influenza and tuberculosis screening
- Approval of credentials and privileges through the Chinle Service Unit Credentials Committee
Community and Cultural Expectations
Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility serves a rural Navajo population, including patients who travel long distances for care and elders whose primary language is Navajo. The psychiatrist must respect local culture, language needs, rural lifestyles, and traditional practices. The facility has traditional providers available, and the psychiatrist is expected to incorporate cultural awareness into treatment planning and patient care when appropriate.
