General Surgeon Job Description

Locum Tenens | Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility | Chinle, Arizona

Position Overview

Arc Health is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible General Surgeon to provide inpatient and outpatient surgical care at Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility, an Indian Health Service facility serving the Navajo Nation. The surgeon will provide operative care, surgical consultations, emergency coverage, and follow-up care while working with the multidisciplinary team and respecting local cultural practices.

Assignment and Schedule

  • Position type: Contract / locum tenens, with services performed on site in the Surgery Department.
  • Start date: To be confirmed, subject to credentialing, privileges, and required security clearance.
  • Coverage dates: November 2-6, 2026: One surgeon; November 23-27, 2026: One surgeon; December 21-31, 2026: Two surgeons; January 14-25, 2027: One surgeon. Starting January 2027, schedule: 1-2 weeks of coverage; exact ongoing dates to be confirmed.
  • Schedule: Inpatient and outpatient duties; daily and weekly hours vary with workload, emergency cases, operative scheduling, and staffing needs.
  • Call: After-hours weekday call and scheduled weekend call are required. The contract standby provision specifies reporting within two hours of notification. Exact call rotation and shift hours will be confirmed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage surgical conditions and injuries; perform major general surgical procedures within approved privileges.
  • Provide preoperative assessments, operative treatment, postoperative management, inpatient rounds, and outpatient follow-up.
  • Serve as a staff surgeon and surgical consultant, including consultation on complex cases and emergency surgical care.
  • Direct the assisting clinical team during surgery and collaborate with anesthesia, nursing, medical staff, and allied health professionals.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies, develop treatment plans, and arrange referrals or transfers when care exceeds local capabilities.
  • Maintain timely, accurate documentation in the facility EHR and RPMS systems; coordinate continuity of care and follow-up.
  • Participate in department and medical staff meetings, peer review, quality improvement, and required safety reporting.
  • Provide culturally respectful care that considers Navajo traditions, language barriers, and the needs of rural communities.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a five-year U.S. General Surgery residency and at least six months of experience in the specialty, unless otherwise approved by the facility Credentials Committee.
  • Board certification or board eligibility in General Surgery.
  • Current, valid, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory. An Arizona license is not specifically required.
  • Current, full, unrestricted DEA registration covering Schedules II through V.
  • Current CPR, BLS, ACLS, ATLS, and PALS certifications; all are required by the performance work statement.
  • No lapse in clinical practice exceeding six months before the assignment.
  • No history of lost or suspended licensure, as specified in the screening requirements; disclose lawsuits, board actions, and substance-use history for review.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and use electronic clinical systems.

Credentialing and Onboarding

  • Obtain and maintain facility medical staff appointment and approved clinical privileges throughout the assignment.
  • Provide three current clinical reference letters from providers familiar with the candidate’s work in the same discipline. One must be from the Chief of Staff, Medical Director, or immediate supervisor at the hospital where the candidate holds or last held privileges; recent residency graduates may provide a program director or service chief letter.
  • Provide hospital and clinic affiliations for the preceding 12 months, including dates, contact names, and telephone numbers.
  • Complete required background and security investigations, fitness-for-duty documentation, immunization verification, and tuberculosis screening.
  • Complete facility orientation, cultural awareness training, and required EHR and information security training.
  • Meet controlled-substance electronic prescribing requirements, including a compatible two-factor authentication USB token.

Compensation and Assignment Support

Pay: $250 per hour, all-inclusive. Government quarters may be available at prevailing rental rates plus applicable utilities; availability must be confirmed
