Position Summary

Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC), serving Alaska Native families in Ketchikan and the surrounding region, is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Medical Director to oversee its medical team and clinical operations. The Medical Director provides leadership across all medical services, ensuring high-quality, culturally sensitive care to the community. This role combines administrative oversight with hands-on clinical practice and offers an opportunity for long-term placement in a rewarding, community-based setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead all medical operations, setting standards for quality care and provider productivity.
• Supervise and mentor physicians, nurse practitioners, and other medical staff.
• Direct credentialing, privileging, and peer review processes.
• Develop and enforce medical policies in compliance with state, federal, and accreditation standards.
• Collaborate with leadership and the Board to evaluate and strengthen health programs.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, and continuing education for medical providers.
• Maintain an active outpatient clinical practice providing family medicine services.
• Report to the CEO on departmental performance, budgeting, and operations.

Qualifications

• MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
• Minimum of two (2) years in a leadership or management role.
• Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state.
• BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification (or obtained within six months of hire).
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively with Native American or rural communities.

Arc Health is seeking a full-time Med-Peds or Family Medicine Physician for a Tribal health facility based in Kotzebue, AK. This is a regional facility that serves as the hub for 11 remote villages. It has a 17-bed inpatient ward, no surgery, and provides outpatient/ emergency care to Alaskan Natives. Within the system there is a strong network of Community Health Workers, NPs and PAs that staff the smaller, remote clinics. This position would begin as soon as credentialed. Here are some key features of this job:

Location:

Kotzebue is located above the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska. It is a remote community, accessible primarily by air, and serves as a hub for several smaller surrounding villages.

The area is home to a predominantly Alaska Native population, particularly Inupiat Eskimos.

Work Setting:

As an outpatient family medicine physician, you would work at the Maniilaq Health Center, which serves the region.

The role is focused on outpatient care, meaning you'll provide general health care services for patients of all ages without requiring hospital or emergency room coverage.

Scope of Practice:

The physician would be responsible for a wide range of services, including routine checkups, preventative care, treatment of acute illnesses, management of chronic conditions, and minor procedures.

Due to the rural nature of the area, the physician may need to be comfortable with a broad scope of practice, as referrals to specialists can be limited.

Cultural Sensitivity:

Working in Kotzebue requires an understanding of the cultural and healthcare needs of the Alaska Native community. Physicians are expected to provide culturally sensitive care and work closely with community health aides and local staff.

Telemedicine & Collaboration:

Physicians often collaborate with other healthcare providers and specialists via telemedicine, especially for complex cases, as access to specialist care in rural Alaska is limited.

Alaskan medical license strongly preferred but not required to start.

Relief Physician Opportunity – Ketchikan, AK

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Setting: Outpatient-only clinic with no call and no weekends

Position Highlights:

• Patient Volume: Approximately 50 patients per week
• Patient Mix: 60% adult / 40% pediatric
• Visit Type: Combination of scheduled and walk-in visits
• Community Size: ~8,000 residents
• EHR: Cerner
• Travel Access: 4 commercial flights daily to Seattle

Position Structure & Compensation:

• Employment Type: Preferred as Relief Physician (1099 contractor)
• Pay Rate: $150/hour DOE
