Family Nurse Practitioner – Urgent Care (Locum Contract)
Location: Haak’u Health Center – Acoma, NM
Schedule: Full-time | Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. | No call
Contract: 13 week contract
Patient Volume: 12–16 patients/day
Opportunity Overview
Haak’u Health Center (HH) is seeking a dedicated Family
Nurse Practitioner (FNP) to provide urgent care coverage as the sole
provider in the department. This is a unique opportunity to deliver
compassionate, culturally humble care in a Tribal community setting.
The FNP will focus primarily on respiratory cases and
urgent care visits. Occasional emergency cases may present, but most are
stabilized and transported.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver
direct urgent care services, including prevention, education, screening,
evaluations, counseling, and treatment.
- Independently
assess patient conditions, create care plans, and manage 12–16 patients
per day.
- Administer
medications and perform procedures in accordance with privileging
guidelines.
- Collaborate
with other HH and community providers for referrals and continuity of
care.
- Ensure
timely documentation, follow-up on labs, and maintain accurate patient
records.
- Support
patient safety initiatives and participate in community health programs.
Qualifications
- Graduate
of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (Master’s degree required).
- Current,
unrestricted NP & RN license.
- BLS
required; ACLS and PALS preferred.
- Minimum
of 2 years of NP experience in urgent care strongly preferred.
- Strong
diagnostic, clinical, and communication skills.
- Ability
to work independently as the only urgent care provider.
- Experience
with Native or underserved populations preferred.

Facility Overview:
The Shiprock Service Unit is the largest geographical service unit within the Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS), serving a diverse population across New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. The facility encompasses the Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC), a 60-bed hospital, and two health centers: Four Corners Regional Health Center and Dzilth-Na-O-Dith-Hle Health Center. The facility provides comprehensive care, including primary care, pediatrics, labor and delivery, intensive care, family practice, urgent care, mental health, dental, and more.
Level IV Trauma Center: The Emergency Department (ED) is certified as a Level IV trauma center and as "Peds Ready" by the New Mexico Emergency Medical Services for Children and the University of New Mexico Child Ready Program, ensuring excellent emergency care for pediatric patients.
Broad Scope of Care: Inpatient and outpatient services include medical-surgical, pediatric care, intensive care, women's health, pharmacy, optometry, dental, radiology, and public health nursing.
Community Focus:
This position allows you to immerse yourself in a setting that respects and integrates cultural traditions into its care approach. Engage in meaningful health education and outreach programs aimed at promoting wellness within the Native communities.
Position Details:
Schedule: 10 hour shifts; Available to work 1 - 2 weeks a month- flexible block schedule; some weekends
Duration: 6-12 months of coverage, potential to extend
EMR: RPMS
Requirements:
Board certified
Valid state license and DEA
Active ACLS, BLS and PALS certifications
Valid state driver’s license
Ability to meet health requirements and pass background checks
Clean NPDP report
